About the Department

We have many properties for sale in the Beziers area – in the countryside and traditional villages among the vineyards between the Mediterranean coast and the spectacular Languedoc National Park. The advantages of this area are numerous; it is the sunniest in France with approximately 300 days of sun per year and there are not the strong winds you may find in other parts of the Languedoc. To be more precise, our properties are located in the areas of Béziers, Bédarieux, Lamalou, Pézenas, the Orb valley and the famous Saint Chinian area.

Within a 13 miles radius you can find beaches, the Upper Languedoc National Park with mountains, cliffs, waterfalls, rivers, a lake, registered historic villages, traditional markets and many more curiosities to be seen and enjoyed by all. Enjoy visits and fun to the Mediterranean coast, vineyards, rivers (for swimming and kayaking) and the Languedoc National Park with astounding scenery and the spectacular Lake du Salagou for swimming and watersports. A further great advantage of this area is that it is close to many airports serviced by the budget airlines, Beziers (from Bristol – May 2008 and Paris only), Montpellier (from London), Carcassonne (from Dublin, Shannon and London), Nimes, Perpignan, Rodez & Gerona (Spain).

Hérault is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from part of the former province of Languedoc.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the wine-growing region was devastated, and thousands of workers revolted. This revolt was suppressed very harshly by the government of Georges Clemenceau.

The catastrophic frost of the winter of 1956 damaged the olive trees, and the olive-growing regions did not recover until 1980. Many of the olive-industry co-ops closed.

Geography

The Canal du Midi has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
