Perched above the charming village of Sainte-Colombe-sur-l’Hers sits an enclave of stone houses that have the most seriously wonderful views… this lovingly restored property takes advantage of its situation as the owner has chosen to place windows at exactly the right height to catch the views across the valley as you walk up the stairs and has placed the private balcony off the master suite just perfectly for enjoying your first morning coffee… bliss!
You enter the property via a generous terrasse that wraps around two sides of the house to take advantage of the lovely views and to create outdoor cooking as well as relaxing spaces overlooking the garden. A set of wide glass doors floods the open kitchen / dining room with light and the creamy colored cabinets… too many to count!… accentuate the light and airy feeling of the space. Entirely cool in summer as it is a true stone house with walls as thick as my forearm can measure… the owner spared no expense however in preparing for winter, as this level has radiant underfloor heating which means that padding around in your stockinged feet will be your preferred activity most mornings! A fireplace open on two sides again bounces light around and into the salon which also has a lovely set of large sliding glass doors.
Up the hand carved staircase and you arrive to the middle level where there are two charming, light filled bedrooms with a bathroom between. It’s up to this next level that takes your breath away… a long horizontal window anchors the wall to your right and you catch the most glorious view across the valley to the hills beyond. A large master suite fills this floor with a generous bedroom, walk in closet and large, luxurious bath. Privacy at this level is most certainly assured so having guests as often as you wish won’t be hard at all! A lovely balcony overlooking the garden and terrace below adds to the charm of this wonderful space.
The property is in St Colombe sur l’Hers – it has a Post Office that doubles as village store / off licence, two bars, a local baker at Chalabre – who is excellent and is renowned locally – delivers to the village store each morning and the Mayer and the Mayoral team are all seriously nice people.
Ste Colombe has many social activities; the village is a member of the Musique en Kercorb festival, which presents high quality, mainly classical, concerts each week during the summer in five different villages, followed by an apéro or a picnic dinner…. plus it is less than 10 mins by car to our village – Chalabre – which has schools/ doctor / dentist / shops / and a farmers market each Saturday morning… complete with candle maker … actually he mostly sells honey but also makes candles from the wax ( they smell wonderful – and don’t drip ).
With Lac de Montbel at only 10 minutes by car, this location can’t be beaten. It is also known for its lakes, mountains, winding country roads and excellent weather, this part of France at the frontier between the Aude and the Ariège departments has been a vacation heaven for years! Biking, hiking, skiing, boating, and beach access are all within easy striking distance .
An expertly designed renovation that maximizes views, light and space, a private garden and wrap around terrace and a master suite of the highest order…
This property will make a wonderful family home or vacation retreat. Please visit to see why….!
