Discovering Hidden and Secret Places in the Var
Situated between some of France’s most famous coastlines, right up to where the Alps meet the clouds, is the Var. Although most of the Var’s visitors are allured to the popular coastal towns of Saint Tropez, Saint Raphael and Fréjus, there are many little-known but equally beautiful places full of charm for you to visit. Don’t take it from us; The Telegraph has listed it first on its list of places you must see before you die.
Discover the Hidden Secrets of the Var
We have an eclectic range of villas and houses in the Var, along the coastline and also further back inland where you will enjoy better value in areas such as Cotignac, Draguignan, Saint Antonin du Var, Montauroux, Fayence or Flayosc just to name a few of this hidden places, yet still a stone’s throw from the coast of the glamourous Riviera when you fancy a ‘bain de foule’ or checking out the ‘Jet-Set’ as the French call them. You may have chosen the area where your new French house will be, but we invite you to join us as we step off the beach to explore the unspoiled countryside that leads into the forests and up to the mountains, all of which make up the Var.
Gassin
Set just of the coast is the village of Gassin, known as a ‘most beautiful village of France’. Overlooking Saint-Tropez, the village was originally established to allow locals to escape the numerous pirates who once patrolled the Mediterranean waters. Nowadays, you can escape to Gassin to inhale the breathtaking views of the Bay of St Tropez and the surrounding hills.
Continue your walk along the medieval terrace until you reach a small cluster of restaurants, with their tables positioned perfectly for you to take in the panoramic views while enjoying your well-earned lunch. As you wander through the ancient streets of Gassin be sure to squeeze through a street called, l’Androuno which claims to be the narrowest street in the world! If you are already missing the coast, you may want to visit the famous beach at Pampelonne before we take our next trip further into the heart of the Var.
Bagnols-en-Foret
Surrounded by forests and umbrella pines, with views over the valleys to the south and west of the Var, sits the village of Bagnols-en-Foret. Leading from the popular coastal town of Frejus, the village suddenly appears on approach through the forest; it’s this enviable position that provides much of its charm and character. With picturesque houses and fountains that sprinkle through the streets, choose a spot in the shade to relax with views across the countryside before you continue your tour. Filled with churches, towers, chapels and a small museum, Bagnols-en-Foret is bursting with historic buildings and ruins dating back as far as the Iron Age.
Aups
We have now reached the true heart of the Var’s northern edge, just a step away from the popular scenery of Gorges du Verdon. You and your family will enjoy exploring every inch of this village, which sits below the remains of a medieval castle. In each corner of this pretty hilltop village, you will find charming sundials, freshwater fountains and quirky cafés to enjoy some shade before you’re dragged away to explore another of its narrow streets or small squares.
If you happen to visit Aups on their market days, you can enjoy a colourful, authentic Provencal market featuring local produce and crafts. During the winter months, you will be treated to some of the best truffles in France; their markets are not to be missed.
Massif de l’Esterel
Have you packed your hiking boots? Even though we have successfully lured you away from the coast further and further into the true core of the Var Massif de l’Esterel, it actually offers you the choice between the mountains and the coast. You’re here now, so join us as we reach the highest peaks of the Massif before heading down the coast road all the way to the sea. Rising steeply, the Massif is divided into hills, cliffs, and mountains, all worth tackling for the impressive views that stretch along the Mediterranean as far as the eye can see. Your journey back down to the sea will be filled with quaint towns, resorts, and beaches drenched in history, and all the while, the scenery is so strong that it remains its biggest attraction.
We have only taken you to a small number of the many villages and towns scattered throughout the Var. Delve deeper and you will appreciate why it has been described as “hypnotique” and “magnifique” by its former explorers from across the world.
