France is western europe's largest country measuring a thousand kilometres from north to south and from east to west. It has 13 geographical regions, each with it's own character, history, landscape, traditions and specialities. This diversity is what makes France a unique country with an unrivalled variety of choices, catering for all individual tastes. Each region is divided into a number of different 'departments' or small counties. There are 96 departments in continental France that are identified by their first two numbers and used for administrative and postcode purposes.
