Background on the region

Normandy
Photo: HP Reiser
Normandy is situated between the Channel and the Paris basin and has been the welcoming harbour of civilizations through the Seine Valley to Paris. It comprises the departments of Seine-Maritime, Eure, Calvados, Manche and Orne and is best known for its coasts, green meadows and cider. The region's name originates from the Viking Norsemen back in the 9th century and it is officially divided in two parts, "Haute et Basse Normandie" (High and Low).

Monuments, abbeys, arts and crafts can testify of these influences: Rouen, its capital with hundred bell-towers and half-timbered houses, the Mont Saint Michel, the Bec-Hellouin abbey, Honfleur and its painters, the Bayeux tapestry, the world famous "haras" (stud farms) of the Orne. History meets geography with the D-Day beaches, the memorials, and the museum in Caen, and in 2004 is celebrated the 60th anniversary of the landings at Arromanches.

Its pleasantness has made Normandy the home of arts, amongst them painting and literature. Monet, Millet, Corot, Pisarro as well as Corneille, Maupassant, Flaubert, Victor Hugo and Dumas "père", have found their inspiration in this region. Normandy welcomes international nautical, musical, and cinematic events such as "Les Voiles de la Liberté" in Rouen, "Jazz sous les Pommiers" in Coutances, the movie festivals in Cabourg and Deauville ... where one can enjoy horse races as well!

The cuisine on the coast includes seafood beautifully prepared in the local fashion. Let's not forget the green bocage, its landscape of meadows enlaced by little roads, and its products; butter, 32 cheeses including the classic Camembert, dairy cream, and magnificent apple pastries. But Normandy is also famous for its prepared cooked meats like Caen tripe and Vire andouille, and its Calvados apple brandy!

Whether you are a tourist or live in Paris, Normandy is very easy and quick to access to by air, boat, rail or road, for a few hours, a quiet holiday, or for a lifetime!
