Fête des Lumières: Lyon’s Greatest Celebration Awaits

Lyon’s Fête des Lumières (Festival of Lights) is a magnificent spectacle that transforms the region‘s capital city into a mesmerising urban landscape of illumination. At this cold time of year, when Lyon is lit up, people from across the city and neighbouring towns come out to enjoy the spectacle after a meal at a local “bouchon” (a restaurant in downtown Lyon or by the Saône serving local specialities).

Projectors bring the old buildings to life, and Lyon residents participate by placing “lumignons” (small lanterns) on their windowsills and balconies on December 8th.

Lyon Festival of Lights 2026

Lyon is all set to amaze you with a stunning edition this year! The Festival of Lights offers thirty diverse works, ranging from grand and spectacular to intimate and participatory, but always unexpected.

Internationally acclaimed artists and young talents create these works, with a platform to showcase their imagination. As in previous years, some installations will remain in place throughout December, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore them.

Dating from the 17th century

The Fête des Lumières dates back to 1643, when the city was spared from the plague. In gratitude, Lyon’s inhabitants placed candles in their windows and lit bonfires on Fourvière Hill, a prominent landmark overlooking the city.

This tradition continued for centuries, and in 1852, the city officially adopted the Festival of Lights to celebrate the installation of a statue of the Virgin Mary on Fourvière Hill.

Today, the Fête des Lumières is one of the most celebrated events outside of Paris, drawing visitors from around the world.

The 2026 Fête des Lumières will run from Saturday, December 5, through Tuesday, December 8.

Opening Hours this year are :

• Saturday, Dec 5: 19:00 – 23:00
• Sunday, Dec 6: 18:00 – 22:00
• Monday, Dec 7 and Tuesday, Dec 8: 19:00 – 23:00

The Ville de Lyon will release the complete program and map in early November.
