House Hunting in Spring

Originally posted on & updated on 10th May, 2024

This new blog article provides tips and information about the benefits of house hunting in France in spring. Buying activity is traditionally higher in spring as property buyers look to take advantage of the warmer weather and plan to secure their dream property in time for the holiday. But this year is a little different; the sun is taking time to come out while new properties trickle through to the market after a subdued start of 2024.

As families return to work and classrooms, we advise planning around bank and school holidays in France, especially in May, which has several religious and historic ‘jours fériés’ when many families take advantage of extended weekends, called bridges, starting with labour day on May 1st, a Wednesday, the perfect day for strategic holiday planning, and long “viaduct” weekends. This is repeated the following week, on the 8th May for VE Day celebrations and the next day, on 9th May (Ascension) for an extended bank holiday weekend. Then a few days later, on the 21st May this year, the French celebrate pentecost (Whit) Monday with another public holiday, so be aware and arrange visits with extra care during this period.

The Spring Real Estate Market

Spring usually sees a surge in new properties hitting the market after winter renovations or owners preparing for summer. This period often sees an increase in the variety of properties available, ranging from countryside properties  to lock-up and leave village houses. The spring market is typically characterised by motivated sellers and a broad inventory, providing house hunters options before the holiday season starts. Buyers may find less competition during this period, leading to more choice, more attention from real estate agents and the potential for a better deal.

What is Spring Like in France?

Spring normally brings comfortable temperatures and longer and brighter days, making house hunting and viewings a joy at this time of the year. Explore different regions without the summer heat or winter chills. Properties are beginning to look their best, with blooming gardens and sunshine highlighting architectural details; however, don’t travel too light as mornings and evenings can still feel cold at this time of year, so you’ll need a jumper and a coat. Some friends of ours have already been in a pool a few times in Hérault this month, but at 18 degrees Celsius, we think we’ll wait for a few weeks.

Beautiful French Landscapes

Spring in France is when landscapes come alive with blooming flowers and verdant greenery. This seasonal transformation extends to the properties on the market, with gardens and outdoor spaces showcasing their full potential. The aesthetic appeal of properties during this season can significantly influence house-hunting, offering potential buyers a more attractive yet realistic view of their future homes.
