Once part of the Midi-Pyrénées region, now known as Occitanie, Haute-Garonne (department number 31) is bordered by several other French departments and shares a border with Spain. Feel the warmth of the sun and enjoy colourful markets filled with aromatic local produce. You will be greeted with song as locals invite you to explore their land, which boasts diverse landscapes. Lose yourself amidst the stunning red brick architecture of Toulouse and the dramatic scenery of the Pyrenees, where some mountain peaks reach over 3,000 metres. Look back down to the foothills, where there is much more to discover.

Explore the Pink City

Prepare to get lost in the city of Toulouse as it is crisscrossed by the Garonne River, dividing its remarkable heritage and offering you some delightful surprises. The Haute-Garonne takes pride in Toulouse and its wealth of distinctive landmarks, such as the Augustins Museum, the Saint-Sernin Basilica, and the Les Jacobins Monastery.

Thanks to Toulouse’s unique architecture, built with pinkish terracotta bricks, it is affectionately known as the Ville Rose (Pink City). As you wander through its streets, the history and charm bring its heritage to life. Make the most of this often-overlooked lively city. Although it is France’s fourth-largest metropolis, Toulouse actually attracts only a small fraction of the visitors that flock to the more renowned cities of Nice, Bordeaux, and Lyon.

Adventure Awaits in Luchon

Heading back down to the foothills of the Pyrénées, you will find the town of Luchon, aptly named 'the Queen of the Pyrénées', offering its visitors the opportunity to attempt outdoor activities such as hiking, canyoneering, rafting and kayaking.

At the end of an eventful day, when the sun goes down, and the skiers flee the slopes, head back to Luchon where you will be allured by its health and wellness spa and relax at their cinemas, bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

Beautiful Neighbouring Valleys

Look around you at the neighbouring valleys of Aspet and Saint-Béat, and you will see that their natural beauty has been cherished, preserving their wildlife and offering picturesque views. Four different ski resorts open their slopes every winter: Le Mourtis, Peyragudes, Luchon-Superbagnères and Bourg d'Oueil. Each resort comes with its own charms, and you’ll have to choose for yourself where you prefer to ski, hike or just explore.

A Journey on Le Canal du Midi

For those of you who prefer the water to the slopes, you can step aboard one of the several boats that travel along the famous Le Canal du Midi. Floating in laid-back luxury, these tours take you from the bustling city of Toulouse, past stunning French vineyards, down to the golden sands of the Mediterranean Sea. Fed by the waters of the Saint Ferreol Lake in the foothills of the Montagne Noire in Aude, the canal is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It crosses through the colourful countryside and passes past the local towns, bastides and churches that are typical of this area.
